(HSFL) Ken Goffstein likes to think of himself as a visionary. During the Covid pandemic lockdown, much of people’s day to day activities were completely shut down. It was a difficult time for many and while his mortgage lending business kept him extremely busy, it was also a time to reflect on the greater community and what he could offer as the world began to open up again. By late 2020, after so much social activity being on hold, Goffstein wanted to do something to help the greater community. He decided to bring a youth flag football league back to Bergen County and the local community. Goffstein, with the help of Steve Gutlove and Rabbi Avi Rosalimsky, formed the Bergen County Flag Football League, which launched in September 2021. With over 350 players enrolled that inaugural season BCFL was a smashing success. Teams have just completed their first spring season of BCFL and as everyone gets back to a more normal pre-pandemic routine, the league will only continue to grow.
Now Goffstein has set his sights on a new high school flag football league. With the backing once again of NFL Flag Football, the Bergen County High School Flag Football League (also known as HSFL) expects to launch this September. Goffstein will co-manage this league with yet another veteran of youth sports and camp management, Rabbi Yehoshua Gold. “Rabbi Gold has a ton of experience when it comes to youth sports and kids, having run Camp Shalom for the last 15 years. In addition to that, he is the associate director of the Maor Yeshiva HS, a division of Sinai Schools. We are really excited about the potential of this league,” Goffstein said. The inaugural season will run from Sept 11 through Nov. 20. Games are expected to be played Sunday evenings (possibly under the lights of a turf field). Final field location is yet to be determined.
