Blood Drive at Young Israel of Teaneck on August 26th
On Wednesday, August 26th, Young Israel of Teaneck will be partnering with the American Red Cross in hosting a blood drive. Although there are blood drives all year round, the summer months inevitably face a massive decrease in blood donations due to the fact that many people are on vacation. This is a major problem each year, as blood donations are integral to our society, saving up to three lives per donation. The blood drive at Young Israel affords people a chance to alleviate that gap.
But of course we cannot overlook those who are unable to donate blood. A common misconception is that oftentimes, people think that if they cannot donate blood, then they are simply incapable of contributing to the blood drive. But this is far from the truth. There are numerous facets in creating a successful blood drive, and people can contribute in a plethora of ways. People can help with the recruitment process by spreading the word to their friends and family. Additionally, volunteers are always needed on the day of the drive itself to help out with the registration and snack tables. Individuals from all around Bergen County and beyond are encouraged to participate.
The blood drive will take place from 3:00-8:00 p.m. at 868 Perry Lane in Teaneck, and although appointments are recommended, walk-ins are welcome. Each donor will receive a $5 gift card to Dunkin’ Donuts and a $2.50 coupon for Turkey Hill’s All-Natural Gelato. You can sign up to donate at redcrossblood.org with the sponsor code “Leaders Save Lives Teaneck” or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. If you have any questions or would like to help out with the blood drive in another way, email Sara Schatz at [email protected] or call 201-708-5249.

Lunch and Learn in Fort Lee
On Monday, August 24th at noon, the Young Israel of Fort Lee is hosting Dr. Dan Nemzer, who will speak about the Jewish Calendar. Do the holidays seem to “jump around” each year compared to the civil calendar? Why do we conduct evening services before dinner in the winter but after dinner in the summer? Dr. Nemzer will explore how the lunar-solar calendar can blend and harmonize the religious and secular cycles of life, measured in days, months, years and more. A little math goes a long way in explaining how it all fits together. Dr. Nemzer teaches “The Math of Money” and other courses at Rutgers University. His Ph.D is from Ohio State University. He is a distinguished member of YIFL and a gabbai of the Shul. The shul is at 1610 Parker Avenue (entrance on Old Palisade Ave.). A Q&A will follow and a light lunch will be served.
Rabbi Goldwicht to Present on Preparing for the Yamim Noraim
A three-week shiur will begin Tuesday night, August 25, and continue through September 8, on preparing for the Yamim Noraim. The shiurim will be given in Hebrew at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun (Old Main) in Teaneck at 8:30pm. Rav Meir Goldwicht, a rosh yeshiva at Yeshiva University’s Mazer School of Talmudic Studies, head of the Stone Beit Medrash Program and Rosh Kollel at Camp Mesorah, will deliver the shiurim. Men and women are welcome to attend.
Cedar Market to Hold Carnival to Celebrate Second Birthday
This Sunday, Cedar Market is celebrating its second birthday in Teaneck at 646 Cedar Lane. The all-afternoon carnival will include a performance by Uncle Moishy, the famous Chicago Boyz acrobats, along with rides, magic shows, a petting zoo and prizes. Clown and jugglers will also create balloon sculptures and other fun for the kids.
“What is a better to give back to the community after camp, before school starts, when kids are at home, driving their parents wild. Let us drive them wild!” Cedar Market’s Yossi Hollander told the Jewish Link. “But, seriously, we are saying thank you far and wide to everyone in Teaneck and beyond, everyone who comes out to support us. We particularly did it on the week between camp and school, to give parents a reprieve.”
Hollander explained that for the second birthday, he has kicked the carnival up a notch. With more of everything, the carnival will be “tons of fun for the family. Kids, parents, grandparents: Everybody is invited,” he said.
Uncle Moishy and the Chicago Boyz will perform multiple times throughout the afternoon, so don’t worry about being too early or too late, and there will also be giveaways, raffles, prizes, samples from Cedar Market’s bakery, popcorn, cotton candy and gift baskets for everyone.
The carnival will run from 1:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Because the event is set in Cedar Market’s parking lot, parking is recommended across the street and on Cedar Lane.
