Master Sofer/Scribe to Speak at Rinat Yisrael
The Adult Education Committee of Congregation Rinat Yisrael will present “The Story of the Scroll,” featuring sofer Rabbi Yaakov Levy, on Sunday, August 21, at 8:15 pm.
Among the Jewish people’s most fundamental ritual objects, sifrei Torah, megillot, mezzuzot and tefillin are the subjects of many halakhot and traditions. Each scroll has a special story to tell. Rabbi Levy will share unique insights from his long experience as a master sofer, including how scrolls are created, how they differ, their key halakhot and traditions and how certain of our most valuable scrolls were preserved despite the ravages of time, war and the Shoah. The lecture will also include a safrut demonstration.
Rabbi Levy descends from a long line of soferim in Morocco and Israel. He is well known for his work restoring priceless sifrei Torah, some dating to the 16th century, within communities across the world.
