The summer is almost over and the new school year is about to begin. On August 9, the National Council of Jewish Women Bergen County Section gathered and spent the afternoon packaging school supplies provided by the generosity of members.

Backpacks, composition books, pens, pencils and crayons were in abundance.

The supplies and six gift cards were organized into 20 backpacks and four large bags full of supplies, and distributed among the children at Youth Consultation Services Holley Center, Center for Hope and Safety, Bergen Family Center and Women’s Rights Information Center.

Specialist in Tannaitic Law to Speak at Rinat

Congregation Rinat Yisrael’s adult education presents Jonathan S. Milgram, PhD, to speak on Labor Day—Monday, September 5, at 8:45 a.m. The presentation is entitled “How to Study the Laws of the Tannaim in the 21st Century.” In this engaging lecture, Professor Milgram illustrates the methods for the study of the Tannaitic law—the Mishnah and related collections—employed by contemporary academics. The origins of the laws of the Tannaim, the foundation of all subsequent Rabbinic law (Talmudic, medieval and modern), are considered within the legal and social contexts of Roman Judea. Examples will be drawn from the field of inheritance law, the subject of Milgram’s most recent book.

Jonathan S. Milgram, PhD, is associate professor of Talmud and Rabbinics at the Jewish Theological Seminary and is, most recently, the author of the book “From Mesopotamia to the Mishnah: Tannaitic Inheritance Law in its Legal and Social Contexts.” He is the former coordinator of the Saul Lieberman Institute of Talmudic Research and served, previously, as professor at The University of London’s School of Oriental African Studies and The London School for Jewish Studies.
