‘Carvalho’s Journey’ to Show in Teaneck

The 2016 Teaneck International Film Festival will include the documentary ‘Carvalho’s Journey,’ which had its world premiere at the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival in 2015. A real-life 19th-century American Western adventure story, ‘Carvalho’s Journey,’ directed by award-winning filmmaker Steve Rivo, introduces us to Solomon Nunes Carvalho (1815-1897), an observant Sephardic Jew born in Charleston, South Carolina, and his life as a groundbreaking explorer and artist.

Teaneck resident Arlene Hirschfelder, author of more than 25 non-fiction books and curricula dealing with American history and contemporary social issues, was thrilled when her book “Photo Odyssey: Solomon Carvalho’s Remarkable Western Adventure, 1853-54” (for Grades 4-12) inspired this feature-length documentary film. She will be present when the film is shown on Sunday, November 6, as will director Rivo, who will participate in a talkback following the screening.

Check the TIFF website, www.teaneckfilmfestival.org, for updates about this film, and details about the entire program for TIFF 2016, which will be held November 3-6 at Teaneck Cinemas, Puffin Cultural Forum and Temple Emeth.
