Bi-Cultural Hebrew Academy in Stamford didn’t let the statewide school shut-down keep students from honoring the State of Israel’s fallen soldiers and victims of terror attacks on Yom Hazikaron, and from following up that solemn day with a Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration marking the Jewish state’s 72nd birthday.

On April 28, Yom Hazikaron, students in grades six through eight were joined from their home in Israel by former BCHA bat sherut Noam Hamlish and her parents, who paid a heartfelt and poignant tribute to Noam’s two uncles who were killed while serving in the Israel Defense Force.

Also on Yom Hazikaron, Bi-Cultural’s Upper School students heard from Rav Binny Freedman of Yeshivat Orayta, located in the Old City of Jerusalem, who shared his own inspiring experiences relating to the day. Following his talk, students had the opportunity to watch the FIDF Yom Hazikaron ceremony from Israel.

The following day, April 29, students and staff transitioned into a celebration of the 72nd anniversary of the State of Israel’s independence with a jubilant school-wide virtual assembly attended by more than 225 people, that kicked off events throughout the grades.

The day’s events included a virtual visit by Dov Solomont, who made aliyah with his family in 2003 at age 13, and served for five years in the IDF, and by Doron Shapir, who grew up in Haifa and is now in the U.S. serving as director of strategic and economic cooperation for the government of Israel’s Economic Mission to the United States. Both Dov and Doron shared their stories of connection and contribution to the land and people of Israel.

Students also played an Israel fact Kahoot! created by Judaic studies teacher Mr. Yarchi.

At day’s end, students joined together to recite the prayer for the State of Israel and to sing Hatikvah.

“It was a great way to celebrate Israel—as one people joining together despite the challenges that surround us” noted Bi-Cultural Head of School Jackie Herman.
