This is in response to last week’s Letter to the Editor by Mark Rosenberg, “Donald Trump, A Villain and a Racist” (Jan. 25, 2024). I read Mr. Rosenberg’s letter with pain; no, sadness; no, anger.
The most immediate comment I must make, is that If Iran builds a nuclear weapon and destroys Israel, God forbid, or if Iran unleashes Hezbollah to fully attack Israel, God forbid, it is only because of the corrupt and incompetent appeasement and de-escalation policies of the Biden and earlier, Obama administrations. But Mr. Rosenberg believes Biden and Obama are morally righteous, having no character flaws and that’s what’s important. Obama, the great apologist to the Third World begging forgiveness for White American and European colonialism, is followed by Biden who made too many racial slips regarding Latinos and Blacks.
Dennis Prager, a Rhodes scholar, host of a nationwide radio talk show, and nationally acclaimed lecturer, is someone who has devoted his life to writing and speaking about moral issues and the importance of character. He, along with a host of conservative intellectuals, support Trump, because a president’s achievements and accomplishments for the nation are far more important than his character. Many millions of Americans believe the same.
I suppose Mr. Rosenberg supports the tearing down of statues and changing the names of institutions that bear the names of Thomas Jefferson, Christopher Columbus and George Washington for their less than perfect moral character. What about John F Kennedy and Bill Clinton. Do they get a pass?
Donald Trump is responsible for the lowest unemployment in generations, for a 1.9% inflation rate, for appointing two conservative Supreme Court justices, for boosting defense spending, for confronting the illegal immigrant crisis, for cutting government regulations, for strongly supporting Israel, for lowering taxes, for confronting Western European countries over their morally indefensible low defense spending, and so much more.
Rav Abraham Kook, the Chatam Sofer and Rav Shlomo Teichtal. who wrote “Eim HaBanim Semeicha” and many other gedolim, all praised the early Zionist pioneers; although they were sinners they were involved in the beginning of our Redemption.
King Yeravoam ben Yoash was an idol worshiper, yet he restored and expanded the national border deep into Ashur, beyond Damascus, establishing regional hegemony not experienced since the heyday of King Shlomo.
In the long run, achievements and accomplishments are more important than one’s character flaws. May Hashem guide the leaders of Israel and the gentile kings.
