Black Box PAC Starts Fall Musical Theater, Drama, Writing and Comedy Classes

(Courtesy of Black Box Theater) Since 2007, Black Box has offered top-level “school year” and summer collaborative theater workshops for performing arts students of all ages, backgrounds and experience levels.

While the company relocates it’s home base from West Englewood in Teaneck to Palisade Avenue in Englewood, many favorite fall classes have started in collaboration with Debonair Musical Hall and Cedar Lane’s Dance Art Creative Center—and most groups remain open for enrollment!

Black Box became known as the only performing arts program in the New York area to offer professional-level classes for diverse groups that caterc to the shomer Shabbat schedules of day school kids, adult performers and their families.

Sunday afternoon’s Kids Musical Theater Workshop runs 4-6 p.m.; a weekday offering of the same program, the Musical Theater Workshop for Kids, runs 5:30-7 p.m., and both include children in grades three through seven. BB alum Ilana Schimmel is the teaching artist during the week; returning instructor Christina Cruz runs Sundays.

The Teen Acting and Musical Theater Workshop, taught by BB alum Leora Hyman, meets Tuesday and Wednesday nights, for students in seventh through twelfth grades.

For those 19-99, Black Box offers the Adult Acting Workshop, an Improv Comedy Workshop and the Writing Workshop, led by Artistic Director Matt Okin and teaching artist/actor/director Mike Gardiner, as well as the brand new Stand Up Comedy class taught by renowned New Jersey-based comic Chip Ambroglio, who opened in June for Gilbert Gottfried at BBPAC.

The new Black Box PAC features a traditional New York-style “black box” flex theater space on the ground level, completely handicapped accessible, as well as classroom, office and meeting spaces two floors above. It’s on the same block as Starbucks and Humus Elite, and just across from Ben & Jerry’s and the new Playa Bowls location.

Cutting-edge professional theater, high-level comedy nights, open mics for both comics and other performing artists, new weekend class offerings and the development of new material for the stage are underway, and news on a number of grand opening events will be available soon. BBPAC has successfully filed for their 501(c)3 status, which is expected to be finalized in November.
