Black Box Studios Summer Program to Produce Legally Blonde

Teaneck —A select number of slots remain in both of Black Box Studios’ Summer Theater Programs for 2015, its sixth warm-weather season. “First Month” is the BBS Rock Musical Theater Intensive in residence at Summer Connections/Summer Stage at The Dwight-Englewood School. Following this, the BBS Dramatic Theater Intensive will be held within Temple Emeth of Teaneck.

In the Rock Musical Theater Intensive, students ages 10–19 will collaborate on a new production of Legally Blonde The Musical from June 29 through July 24, with shows on the evenings of July 21, 22, and 23. Everything happens on The Dwight-Englewood campus—315 E. Palisade Avenue, Englewood—culminating with the performances in its 400-seat theater. All elements of NY-style theater are explored, including dramaturgy, acting, singing, dance, and behind-the-scenes work. Past BBS summer musicals include Pippin, 1776, Fiddler on the Roof, Les Miserables, and Two Gentlemen of Verona: The Rock Musical Comedy Romance. Register at www.d-e.org/summer, and look out for the next round of mandatory auditions. (Space permitting, no one is turned away and auditions are for placement purposes only.)

From July 26 through August 14, students up to age 19 will come together in Teaneck to mount a non-musical play, the title of which remains to be announced. Performances are on the evenings of August 12 and 13. With a focus on dramaturgy, acting, and collaborative stagecraft—as well as all behind-the-scenes elements—the Dramatic Theater Intensive meets, rehearses, and performs within a large auditorium at Temple Emeth, 1666 Windsor Road, Teaneck. Past BBS summer dramas include Detective Story, Our Town, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Register at www.blackboxnynj.com/camp, and mandatory auditions for any new students will be held by appointment only before the start of summer.

Throughout July and August, almost simultaneously to the above, a number of BBS teaching artists will be working Off-Broadway in NYC, staging the initial workshop production of Huey Esquire’s all-original This Time, a new musical romance in partnership with downtown’s renowned Theater for the New City. BBS Artistic Director Matt Okin will direct, with Musical Direction by BBS regular Brody Greif.

On June 1, Black Box Studios will open “early bird” registration for its Fall/Winter 2015–16 semester, which begins at Temple Emeth in Teaneck on September 8. Any classes requiring auditions, such as Teen Drama Ensemble or Teen Musical Theater Ensemble, will offer a first round of try-outs just before the start of summer—details to be announced.
