Boy Scout Troop 226 in the Land of Skannatati

On Chol ha-Mo’ed Sukkot, Boy Scout Troop 226, chartered to the Jewish Center of Teaneck, went to Harriman State Park for a three-mile hike. They were accompanied by several parents and younger siblings, including members of Pack 613 and a Girl Scout Brownie troop in Fair Lawn.

The hike began at the Lake Skannatati parking area on Seven Lakes Drive and headed west on the Long Path, identifying the various trees and other vegetation along the way. The Scouts had the opportunity to practice the safe use of woods tools. When the group reached a junction with the Dunning Trail, it turned right and began to follow this interesting trail which is routed along an old mining road, taking a slight detour to explore the remnants of the Pine Swamp Mine, last worked over 120 years ago. The Scouts were fascinated by this mine, which features a deep rock cut and a passageway carved into the hillside.

The hike concluded with a climb of Pine Swamp Mountain. Near the summit, the group enjoyed a panoramic view over Lakes Skannatati and Kanawauke. The participants then returned to their cars.

Troop 226 meets on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Jewish Center of Teaneck. All boys ages 11-17 are welcome to join. For more information, please contact Daniel Chazin, Scoutmaster, 201.835.5338, DChazin_aol.com.
