BPY joined the Hackensack Riverkeeper, Inc. for the annual Mitzvah Day cleanup of the Van Saun Mill Brook and the BPY woods. Under the instruction of Morah Jean Myers, the devoted crew of the Goldstein, Harary, Hindin and Maron families braved the rain and put on their waist wader boots to clean up their beloved brook. The students found all types of interesting garbage including lots of plastic bags, bottles, cans, tiles, metal pipes, hoses and chip bags. They also cleared some little dams to allow the brook to freely flow. Morah Myers tied in their watershed, micro-plastic, sand, river runoff and habitat units with the students of various ages and really brought classroom learning to life. A huge highlight was finding a deer skull! It was hands on science and exploration at its best while integrating with BPY’s strong emphasis on chesed.
