BPY scientists catapulted into the world of engineering during the annual Discovery Learning Day. It was awe inspiring to walk through the halls and sense the tangible excitement as students used their creativity and scientific understanding to build and test their prototype catapults. Leading up to this amazing day of hands on experimentation and exploration, the students were introduced to the concept of catapults in science class. Then, the students in grades one through five followed a very clear engineering process to brainstorm their ideas, build a prototype, test it out and then using the collected data, make improvements as needed. Throughout the day students kept journals about their creations. At the end of the day, they put their creations to the test as they tried to reach the BPY castle! A special thank you to Petty Officer Tao, Petty Officer Hadden and Chief Petty Officer Waligur who shared their professional experience working with catapults on an aircraft carrier. A big thank you to the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division for skyping with the students—they were so inspiring! This outstanding day of science was made possible by the planning and leadership of Morah Jean, her DLD committee, the elementary school teachers and, of course, the creative students who put their heart and soul into their catapult prototypes.
