BPY Eighth Grade Learns Through Hands-On Experience

Ben Porat Yosef eighth grade students completed their study of the skeletal structure, and then learned through experimentation how minerals are deposited onto a flexible scaffolding on bones, and how they provide the bones’ rigid structure. The students placed chicken bones in vinegar over the winter break. As the vinegar reacted with bone to remove the calcium, it left only the flexible connective tissue. The students were thereby able to fully understand the role and importance of calcium to bone composition, and how the mineral enables bones to deal with the pressure of the muscle contractions to which they are subjected continually.
