First grade had a wonderful trip to the Society of Illustrators and Safra Synagogue. The day began with a presentation from the Society of Illustrators’ museum educator, and continued with hands-on illustration activities and exploration of the exhibit. The first graders also read the picture books that feature these illustrations, and they were particularly excited to find original illustrations from the books they had read in class! The day concluded with a tour of the Safra Synagogue led by Morah Rachel Levy. Levy taught the students about the history of the synagogue and its design, and students also had the opportunity to see the Sefardic and Ashkenazic sifrei Torah.
