BPY’s first and second grade mathematicians were thrilled to show off their measurement skills to their parents during Math Night. The evening started off with a read aloud that was perfect for a night all about measurement: “How Big is a Foot?” by Rolf Mylier. As Mrs. Maron read the story, the students learned how important it is to use a standard form when measuring. In the case of the king’s present, the bed was way too small for his queen because everyone used a different standard of measurement. After reviewing how to measure with either a ruler or objects like paper clips, the children practiced these skills with a scavenger hunt around their houses and an exciting game of Tic-Tac-Toe. As a culminating project, the students created measurement monsters which they shared with all of the participants. The monsters were adorable and it was amazing how unique each one was! The students were so engaged and put their best foot forward!
