Inspired by their “trip” to Israel on Yom Ha’atzmaut, Ben Porat Yosef kindergarten students began studying airplanes and air travel. The students discussed places they have visited through air travel, how airplanes work and learned about how the Wright brothers invented the first airplane. Students individually wrote their own informational texts and then worked in teams to design and create their own “cockpits,” complete with gears and GPS systems. They also created and tested their airplanes using the knowledge they acquired about the roles of air and wind in flight and air travel. To cap off the unit, they got a special visit from “Pilot Joe,” a Teaneck resident and pilot who volunteers for the U.S. government. Pilot Joe taught the students about the airplanes he flies, where he travels and the training required to become a pilot.
