The highlight of BPY second grade math studies recently was the celebration and culmination of the fractions unit: fraction cookies. They learned all about fractions. They explored equal and unequal parts, then moved on to halves, thirds and fourths. Finally, they learned how to add fractions together to make a whole. To wrap up the unit, the students planned a design for a cookie. They chose to divide their cookies into halves, thirds or fourths and then decorated each part with frosting and toppings. After drawing their design and describing it in words, the students had the chance to decorate a real cookie to match their designs. Everyone had a great time learning about—and eating—fractions.
