As part of the unit on social issues in Humanities, the BPY sixth graders have been working in book clubs. Students are reading novels, identifying social issues within the text and discussing the literature with their groups. In “Freak the Mighty,” by Rodman Philbrick, for example, the characters will encounter bullying, while in “Maniac Magee,” by Jerry Spinelli, discrimination plays a prominent role. The clubs are a chance for the students to deepen their thinking through dialogue with their peers.
