Dr. Kenneth Prager, professor of medicine and director of clinical ethics at Columbia University Medical Center, recently extended a personal invitation to Aaron Kogut, Ben Porat Yosef middle school science educator, to attend the monthly bioethics meetings held at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Mr. Kogut holds a master’s degree in bioethics from a joint program between Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
Mr. Kogut attended the June meeting, which discussed the issues involved with a particular end-of-life case. The meeting attendees included a variety of prestigious doctors, ethicists, palliative care specialists, attorneys, chaplains and others involved with making difficult medical ethical decisions. Mr. Kogut, always adept at bringing ‘real life’ issues and questions to help his students gain an appreciation of the application of science, stated of the experience, “It’s great to be able to see ethics in the field. It’s even better to be able to bring it back to the classroom after.”
