Eighth grade students were honored to have the opportunity to study with Rabbi Zev Reichman. Together they learned two chapters of Rambam, parts of Brachot and Shabbat in the Gemara, as they focused on tzedakah. He opened by asking if it is better to save a business or give a direct gift. The students shared their opinions and then learned that when we do tzedakah we should be sensitive to the person’s needs as well as the person’s dignity. They then discussed the concept of “maalin bikdusha.” In 1957, Rav Ovadia Yosef was asked a question about how to deal with an endowment for the Talmud Torah of Baghdad, since there was no longer a community or school. Because of the concept of maalin bikdusha, there was a question if the endowment should be used for a school or a beit knesset. The students then studied in the text what has more kedusha- a yeshiva/school or a beit knesset. The decision was that the money could go to Yeshivat Porat Yosef, a yeshiva at that time.
When thinking about tzedakah, we need to consider how can we make the biggest difference? In addition, we must give in the best way that we can and try to make the greatest impact. The students were truly inspired by his message. This special program was graciously sponsored by the Nesser family.
