This past week, the BPY third grade students were introduced to Mishna learning. They played the game Broken Phone and saw the message changed when they passed a word from one person to another. They then compared that to the Oral Torah that was passed from generation to generation and saw why Rabbi Yehuda Hanasi was so afraid that changes would be applied and it would be forgotten. He decided to write down the Oral Torah and part of that is the Mishna we know today. They started studying the first Mishna in Pirkei Avot: “Moshe received the Torah from Sinai,” and the students wore costumes and presented the transmission of the Mishna to one another. The students had a lot of fun learning the first lesson through song and dance!
