Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky, executive director, Bris Avrohom, Hillside, celebrated his Jewish birthday with friends and community members. He expressed the importance of a Jewish birthday by explaining that the Lubavitcher Rebbe said that a Jewish birthday is a moment to reflect and thank God for His benevolence and endless blessings for each individual. Rabbi Kanelsky elaborated on this concept to the attendees and related stories connected to the week’s parsha. Members of the audience shared stories of their connections to Yiddishkeit thanks to Bris Avrohom and the encouragement of Rabbi Kanelsky and Mrs. Shterney Kanelsky, associate director of Bris Avrohom.
The Rebbe began the campaign for people to put on tefillin when Jerusalem was unified 50 years ago. With the concurrent celebration of this anniversary with his birthday celebration, Rabbi Kanelsky emphasized this mitzvah not only for each individual to continue to do, but for those who had not yet started to begin doing so. He also suggested to all to carry an extra set of tefillin in case they meet someone who has not yet begun this mitzvah, and encourage them to do so.
