The seventh annual Russian Shabbaton, “A Weekend to Remember,” sponsored by Chamah, Lubavitch Youth Organization and Bris Avrohom, as well as 20 other institutions in the tri-state area, was recently held at the Crowne Plaza in Stamford, Connecticut. The event, which took place over the weekend from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, drew over 1,000 tri-state Jewish participants from the former Soviet Union, as well as rabbis and notable speakers.
The Bris Avrohom staff who participated were Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky, Executive Director; Mrs. Shterney Kanelsky, Associate Director; Rabbi Baruch Lepkivker, Program Director and Rabbi Berel Zaltzman, Senior Rabbi.
A variety of lectures were held on the topics of Judaism, science and Kabbalah, just to name a few, and the attendees feasted on sumptuous meals and enjoyed the entertainment.
Pictured is Rebbetzin Shterney Kanelsky, one of the lecturers, who spoke on the connection between Russian Jewry and the Rebbe. She related personal stories of self-sacrifice for Yiddishkeit while growing up in the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. Other stories included how the Rebbe sent, at great risk, religious articles through the underground network.
