Bris Avrohom and the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey held a commemoration ceremony in honor of the fallen victims of Jersey City. For the first time ever a new menorah was lit in the World Trade Center PATH station in a pre-Chanukah ceremony.
“This menorah is a beacon of light for the four people we lost,” said Rabbi Mordechai Kanelsky. “Their souls are lighting up in the lights of the menorah. Their souls are being elevated. We continue their legacy to make the world a better place; the message is to make light and increase light.”
Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton also used the symbolism of light dispelling darkness as a message of tolerance.
“We pledge to make the season a joy and to denounce those who bring hate into our community,” he said, adding the menorah lighting was the authority making a firm statement about the “values of peace and love.”
