Bruriah’s Yom Hashoah observance began with six students who related the emotional and inspiring stories of family members who had survived the Holocaust. Six candles were lit in honor and memory of these relatives, in addition to all the kedoshim who perished in the Holocaust. All learning was dedicated for the aliya of the neshamot of these individuals. Students also heard from Holocaust survivor Sam Zelikson as he spoke about his experiences in many concentration camps, his time as a Russian partisan, and all the hardships and suffering he was forced to endure during the war. He left the students with the powerful message of “Never give up!” as he told them the truth about all that had happened to him during and after the war, how he survived and continues to live proudly. The meaningful programs of this day enhanced the students’ understanding of life during the Holocaust, and their appreciation of the comfortable lives they live today as proud Jews.
