Bruriah 1 Team Squeezes by Sonics

The SKA Sonics recently hosted the Bruriah Lightning in a matchup of two of the league’s top teams. When they met earlier this season, the Sonic topped the Lightning by a mere four points. The Bruriah squad headed to Long Island, determined to avenge the previous defeat.

Rachel Hershkowitz got Bruriah off to a 4-0 lead early in the first few minutes. SKA caught up quickly and led 11-6 at the end of the first quarter. In the second, SKA pulled ahead, but with two minutes left before halftime, Bruriah scored and cut the lead to just two points.

In the third quarter, Bruriah scored early, tying the game at 18 before taking the lead. Shayna Schwartz had a season high in points and Eliana Alter hit two big shots to lead Bruriah’s offense.

In the fourth quarter, the defense held strong with an all-around team effort, numerous blocked shots, and many turnovers. Shayna Rozensweig, Ilana Markowitz, and Avigayil Wiener hit key free throws down the stretch.

Bruriah came out on top, 36-33, beating the only previously undefeated team in the league. Bruriah, now 7-2, will host Magen David on 1/28/14.
