About two weeks ago, mysterious signs went up around the school, asking everyone what S.M.E.E.P means. Clearly it’s an acronym, but for what? Then on Friday, seniors Shira Allen, Tova Felsenthal, Yael Panahbarhagh and Shira Shalmon performed a skit in the ballroom to reveal what S.M.E.E.P. is. The skit began with Yael and Shira S. discussing Sephardi and Middle Eastern foods, like chamin and matbucha, while Tova and Shira A. asked what they were talking about. All of the girls then broke out S.M.E.E.P.—the Sephardi and Middle Eastern Educational Program. According to S.M.E.E.P. heads Yael and Shira S., the program is primarily to educate the mainly Ashkenazi school about Sephardic, Persian and Bucharian traditions, their food and general culture. This program is different than other past Sephardi clubs, because it’s a way to welcome everyone to embrace the culture. A large number of students have joined the club.
