Bruriah Lightning athletics continues to provide many things to cheer about. Lightning players and coaches bring their enthusiasm and passion to the courts night in and night out. The JV and varsity basketball and volleyball teams all had successful season openers. The basketball teams hosted Kushner and the volleyball teams played at Kushner. Under the guidance of coaches Shulie Singer and Dena Lichtman, the JV is is coming into its own in only its second season as a team at Bruriah. Sophomores Adina Pinsker and Sarah Yager lead the JV basketball team. The team is rounded out by sophomores Talya Alter, Goldie Amsel, Sorah Bayla Fink, Danielle Gardner, Lily Lightman, Chaya Stanislavsky and Rachel Stern; and freshmen Nomi Amsel, Leah Baron, Hannah Grayman, Adina Shayowitz and Aliza Warburg. All JV players have been seeing considerable playing time. The JV is 1-2 heading into its home game against HANC.
Varsity basketball at Bruriah promises exciting seasons. The Lightning A-League played four games in the first week of the season and finished at 3-1. Most impressive isn’t the W-L, but the significant contributions of each team member. Coaches Susan Rifkin and Dena Lichtman marvel at how the Lightning is getting the job done by distributing the ball on the offensive end and stepping up on defense. Lead by senior Tovah Weiskopf and juniors Gabi Goldberg, Shira Hagler and Jessie Orgel, the team is rounded out by senior Tali Becker, juniors Mikayla Elk and Eliana Friedman, sophomore Gabrielle Thurm and freshmen Kayla Goldstein, Miriam Klerer, Yael Sabo and Rachel Shmuel. Varsity B-League goes on the road in mid-November for its first game against Magen David. Captains senior Ilana Markowitz and juniors Rina Finkelstein, Aliza Kurtz and Talya Markowitz are joined by juniors Gila Alter, Reina Goldberg, Rachi Levy, Racheli Lipner and Sarena Weiderkher, sophomore Avital Wiener and freshmen Avigayil Kahn, Aliza Rothberg, Judith Wechter and Avigayil Zupnik.
