Bruriah had its first Points to Ponder program, a school-wide, interdisciplinary initiative that will take place four times a year. Each season, a question is posed to the school that connects to an anchor text studied in one of their major subjects (with other classes weighing in). During lunch, teachers and students convene to discuss the question and hear from each other as to their thoughts on the matter and how their particular subject relates.
This season’s question was, “What makes us human?” Every student read “The Pedestrian” by Ray Bradbury, analyzing how his dystopian story depicts what truly makes people unique, such as free will and creativity. Interested students met for lunch where apple pie, pumpkin bread and hot cider were served. Joined by English, history, Chumash and Halacha teachers, students and faculty engaged in discussion as to the great potential that exists inside of humans and how that can best be channeled.
