Bruriah’s Culture Club visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Sunday to see the Manet, Degas exhibit. An optional school trip on a Sunday may not be for everyone, but, says Bruriah’s Director of Academic Enrichment Margueya Poupko, this is not out of the ordinary for a Bruriah student: “Bruriah students’ love of learning far exceeds the boundaries of the classroom. Spending a Sunday at an art lecture, and getting to experience rare pieces of art is very much in tandem with their passion for enrichment and edification.”
Sunday’s trip began at Stern College for a lecture on the two French artists, given by art professor Jacob Wisse. Following lunch, the students took a tour of the exhibit, led by Nancy Edelman, an art history teacher who shared her passion and erudition on the artists and their paintings. The students learned about the artists’ rivalry, competition and methodology as well as their historical context. Senior Devora Fisch remarked on the exhibit, “It really helped us understand the personalities of the artists and just how human they were.” Mrs. Edelman focused on the Jewish historical connection as well as the ways in which both artists affected the broader art world.
The cultural odyssey will continue with the Culture Club’s next trip in March, when they will be attending the opera at Lincoln Center.
