The past two weeks, Bruriah’s 11th and 12th graders had the opportunity to participate in the NCSY Houston Chesed Mission. The trip was infused with inspiring words, meaningful chesed and lots of fun!
The girls started out by rebuilding the home of Ms. Duncan, a blind woman whose house was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey. This task proved to be very physically demanding, but the girls were happy to put in the work to help return the sense of stability in Ms. Duncan’s life.
After they finished at the house, the students went to daven Mincha at the United Orthodox Synagogue. Although the girls thought it was going to be a regular Mincha, it turned out to be incredibly meaningful with words of Torah from NCSY director, Rabbi Aryeh Wielgus. The next day, the girls volunteered at the Houston Food Bank, the country’s largest food bank, where they helped sort and pack food for local families in need.
Shabbos was spent in the beautiful Meyerland community, which was ecstatic to be hosting the girls. Shabbos concluded with a musical Havdala in the Meyerland shul, and afterwards they made their way to the Kemah Boardwalk. At the boardwalk, the girls had a closing ceremony by their NCSY leader Suzanne Rabinovitch where they all stated why their service there was so meaningful to the Houston community. This trip reinforced the Bruriah students’ commitment to chessed and giving back to Jewish communities, while simultaneously creating an incredible bonding experience that will last the girls a lifetime.
