Black and white swaths of fabric transform the hallways of Bruriah High School as they become the exhibit space for the annual Holocaust Museum. Humanscale angel wings made of black feathers loom over a display about Auschwitz’s infamous Angel of Death. A giant umbrella suspended from the ceiling compels one to remember the victims by looking up at their images. Pictures of Holocaust survivors flanked by their extended families serve to remind us that the Jewish nation stands strong. Every year, the junior class learns the history of the Holocaust, and then creates a memorial to the six million who perished. The installations include prewar happenings, the Holocaust, rebuilding and spiritual resistance. Students expressed feeling the “heaviness” of the exhibit after the tour with docents Aliza Walzman, Naomi Kraemer, Sophie Seidman and Tamar Shmuel. The end of the tour focuses on the future, with a Change for Change fundraiser to build a playground in the community of Beit Lechem. RPRY eighth graders visited recently and there are more visitors due to experience this impactful exhibit. Eighth grade student, Raizy Cohen shared that “Visiting the Bruriah Holocaust Museum was an eye-opening experience. It helped us understand even more after doing the ‘Names not Numbers©’ program last year.” Bruriah looks forward to greeting other schools and local leaders at this exhibit.
