Helping students develop a strong sense of self is a priority at Bruriah Middle School. The guidance department conducts workshops throughout the year with each class to discuss relevant topics. In addition, one on one meetings with students and guidance department staff, as well as with grade advisers, are built into the structure of the day. Recent workshops included the topic of roles and identity in sixth grade. Through an interactive activity, the girls had a chance to explore common roles in their lives (Jewish girl, sister, friend, student, etc.) and the responsibilities that come along with them. Self-esteem was the focus of seventh grade sessions. The girls interviewed each other about their strengths and weaknesses and discussed why it’s important to be aware of both. In eighth grade, the girls wrote “me-poems,” which focused on their personal accomplishments and aspirations. When talking to eighth graders Shayna Benkhen, Ariella Lev and Aviva Strauss, they mentioned that they “really learned about themselves and had a chance to express who they really are.” Everyone looks forward to continued programming and opportunities throughout the year.
