At the CIJE competition for New Jersey middle schools, Bruriah’s eighth graders competed against their peers to engineer the best structure that would withstand various natural disasters. Called the Extreme Engineering Challenge, students were given an array of supplies to create a structure with specific qualifications and would withstand numerous environmental stressors. Students participated in a scavenger hunt that helped them gain a better understanding of electrical engineering, learn more about the projects and hone their problem-solving skills, while having the opportunity to win exciting prizes. Bruriah’s students worked in groups of three to build structures that were then exposed to simulated natural disasters and had to withstand those extra stressors. Bruriah’s two groups met all criteria and were able to earn extra points for certain stressors. The second half of the program was a timed scavenger hunt through the High School Innovation Day, and both groups tied for first place along with three other groups. This was a fantastic opportunity for Bruriah to shine. Most importantly, the students were great team-players, respectful and maintained a positive attitude the whole time!
