Earlier in the year, Bruriah hosted a club fair where clubs and committees set up booths to encourage students to get involved in their respective causes. There, Bruriah junior Mattie Rose Fooksman set up a booth for Save a Child’s Heart, an organization based in Israel dedicated to treating children from around the world with congenital heart conditions, ones who wouldn’t otherwise have access to cardiac care. At the fair, Mattie Rose handed out brochures and stickers in an effort to raise awareness about the tremendous humanitarian efforts of this organization, one that she felt passionate about after volunteering there this past summer. Now, several months later, the Save a Child’s Heart Club boasts a growing membership of 25 students who meet every two weeks to discuss ways to raise funds for this incredible cause.
After a few collaboration sessions, the club created a coin challenge to raise money for the organization. Each grade was given a jar and tasked with filling the jar with as many coins as possible. As the jars became filled with coins, the girls began stuffing dollars into the jars instead, and in a short span of time over $500 was raised from four small jars.
“I feel so grateful to be surrounded by such an incredible group of girls at Bruriah,” said Mattie Rose. “Even after hours of classes, schoolwork and other extracurricular activities, everyone still manages to find time to prioritize chesed and helping others.”
