Bruriah Sophomores Take Annual Mitzvah Trip

The Bruriah sophomores went MIA—Mitzvot in Action—on the annual trip afforded the tenth graders. Noted mohel and speaker, Rabbi Eliezer Krohn, gave a shiur about brit milah and the students gained insight into the process and kedusha that comes with a baby boy’s circumcision. Then, the students headed to Lakewood, where they commenced their hands on mitzvah experiences.

Hosted by Navi teacher Raizy Hirth, the students partook in the mitzvah of hafrashat challah, which is particularly significant for women. The students then visited a yeshiva where they learned about the inner workings of a shatnez lab, where clothing and couches are checked for shatnez. Many girls expressed newfound interest in adhering carefully to the laws of shatnez.

After lunch the students performed their second hands-on mitzvah of the day, tevilat keilim. For some, it was their first time performing the mitzvah of immersing dishes in a mikvah. The students also heard from a safrut expert, after which many of the students wrote Torah letters on real klaf. In order to perform a mitzvah with an exceptional zchut, the students watched classmate Serah Shochet perform shiluach hakan and send a mother bird away from her nest.

Finally, the sophomores arrived at the beautiful Eagle’s Landing day camp in North Brunswick and davened Mincha. Dinner and marshmallows were followed by a kumzitz around a blazing bonfire. The sense of achdut as they swayed around the fire was almost palpable. The sophomores thank all their teachers, especially Rivky Schwartz, who made the sophomore mitzvah trip possible.
