When it comes to chesed, Bruriah students are proving once again that they are quite literally “a cut above.”
This Monday, Bruriah held its second annual hair-cutting for Zichron Menachem, a Jerusalem-based charity that supports children grappling with cancer and their families. Last year’s campaign was so successful that the student leadership decided to run the effort again this year.
Following tefillah, students viewed an inspirational video about the organization and the profound effect the hair donations have on the lives of the recipients. Then eight students had their hair cut in a nail-biting ceremony in front of the entire school, which enthusiastically cheered them on.
In viewing the proceedings, Bruriah junior Aliza Kurtz of Passaic poignantly commented, “It is a very unique experience when one actually realizes what a gift hair is and how it has the potential to give someone her life back.”
Classmate Ariel Ezra of Elizabeth agreed and was one of Monday’s hair donors. “I’ve wanted to do this since I was in ninth grade, she said. “I have something other children don’t, so if I’m able to give it, I am happy to.”
Other donors included Rivka Marcus of Springfield; Atara Pietruszka of Bergenfield; Talia Pinsker of Hillside who, despite donating a whopping ten inches, was still left with lengthy locks; Leeba Plotsker of Brooklyn; Shalva Poppers of Elizabeth; Rivka Shapiro of Hillside; and Batsheva Rosenfeld of Spring Valley.
Bruriah alumna Dena Bender, class of 2012, conducted the cutting on behalf of the students.
All hair has been donated to make wigs for children battling cancer in Israel who are serviced by Zichron Menachem.
