Last Wednesday, Bruriah students had the distinct privilege to host Mr. Arky Staiman, world-famous IDF reservist, whose instagram posts (@israelwitharky) about his experiences have gone viral in the aftermath October 7. Arky is a member of the IDF’s search and rescue brigade which necessitates performing chesed shel emes on a regular basis. He spoke to students about the extremely difficult and holy work he and his unit have done in recent months while providing an incredibly unique perspective on what chesed really means. He explained that chesed is not always easy; there are moments that will challenge us, but through that we need to be mindful that there is always meaning and purpose to our mission.

Bearing this message in mind, Arky gave the students missions of their own: Use mental strength as ammunition; become physically strong and healthy; develop a relationship with Hashem; strengthen family bonds. Arky explained that these “missions” have helped him get through the really challenging ones, and he believes that they will help others when faced with personal challenges.

After Arky’s powerful message, students were given the opportunity to implement it. The chesed committee placed QR codes with information about neighborhood chesed organizations for students to become involved with over the summer. This was an extremely poignant way to end off a school year filled with chesed initiatives and opportunities, and Bruriah is immensely grateful to Staiman for everything that he does for Am Yisrael and for making his mission relevant everyday life.
