Building a Website: DIY Creator or Designer?

I recently posted a link to an article that weighs the pros and cons of building a website yourself or using a developer. I was very excited to read the post and even more excited to share it with all of you.

As a designer, this is a question I get all the time, especially from people who have come to me after trying to build a site themselves, using tools like Wix, SquareSpace or even GoDaddy’s Website Builder. The advertisements make it look so simple. A few clicks here, a few lines of text there, and drop a photo in the middle and voila, you’re done! Ok, maybe that is too harsh. These platforms can be very simple, intuitive and useful. But building a website doesn’t take minutes like these ads say. It still takes time to make it look professional, and to fit your needs.

There are really pros and cons for each. With the DIY Creators, while you are given a lot of tools to work with, you are limited by the options, styles and features that they offer. A designer can give you ideas, help you put those ideas into your project and, at the end, you’ll get the final product that you are happy with, not what fits into the creator’s templates.

Why, this post sounds very biased, no? Well, it is. And this isn’t meant to be insulting to those who have built their websites using these web builders. Many of my existing clients have come to me, after trying to put a site together, and realizing that it just doesn’t seem right. It doesn’t have that “WOW” feel they were looking for. Many others have tried thinking they can get it done in an hour or two, and then found that it is taking a lot longer than they thought.

That is where designers come in. It doesn’t have to be me, though I’d be happy if it was, but do your business, your website and your calendar a favor and hire a professional to build your website. You will be happier in the long run with a finished product you’ll love, and save the time you don’t have to lose.
