Cabinet Secretary Jack Lew Addresses RYNJ Students

In honor of Election Day this year, RYNJ grandparent, Secretary Jack Lew, spoke with RYNJ’s fourth and fifth grade classes about his experience serving on the cabinets of President Clinton and President Obama as Secretary of the Treasury. The students have been learning about the structure in the U.S. government in addition to the voting process, so this was a wonderful opportunity for them to hear a first-hand report of the roles of a government official. Secretary Lew also shared some fun facts about the president’s office, how the president conducts meetings and the different rooms used in the White House. After the presentation, fourth and fifth graders had a chance to present thoughtful questions to Secretary Lew about his experience, starting with his grandson, Moshe Lew (4B). In answering the students’ questions, Secretary Lew stressed how the incredible jobs of those who dedicate their lives to public service can be seen as a way of tikkun olam. After sharing a bit of the story about his signature on dollar bills, Secretary Lew shared the life lesson of working hard at improving even when it’s hard. The students express their hakarat hatov to Secretary Lew for spending time with them and sharing a glimpse of the U.S. government and the happenings at the White House.
