The Adult Education Committee of Congregation Bnai Yeshurun welcomes Rabbi Dr. Gil Perl as their Joseph N. Muschel scholar-in-residence this Shabbat, Parshat Shemot, December 24-25. He will speak three times over Shabbat in addition to delivering the drasha at the 9:15 minyan. These talks will include “Intersectionality: The Newest Challenge of Campus Life,” a Friday night oneg (with refreshments!); “Hammurabi and the Torah” on Shabbat morning following the 9 a.m. minyan; and “The Life and Times of the Netziv: What Was the Rosh Yeshiva Reading? Intellectual Openness in 19th Century Lithuania” Shabbat afternoon after zman mincha.
Rabbi Dr. Gil S. Perl is the CEO of the Ades Family Foundation and the founding head of school of the Jewish Leadership Academy, a selective Jewish middle and high school opening in the Miami area for the fall of 2023. A nationally sought after speaker, teacher and thinker, Rabbi Perl earned his PhD from Harvard, and his semicha from Yeshiva University. He is the recipient of awards for excellence in teaching from both Harvard and Yeshiva. Rabbi Perl writes and lectures widely on topics relating to the history of modern Jewry, contemporary Jewish education and Modern Orthodoxy. He is the author of the book “The Pillar of Volozhin: Rabbi Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin and the World of Nineteenth-Century Lithuanian Torah Scholarship,” published by Academic Studies Press.
