MGBL championship weekend lived up to the hype with three fast-paced exciting games. In the first semifinal game, Chai Lifeline looked to continue their almost perfect season against a very talented Land Rush Title Agency LLC squad. Yoni Mann led Land Rush with 33 points but the balanced scoring of Chai Lifeline proved to be too much as they advanced with a 73-66 win. In the nightcap, the number two team, Aamatex Powerwashing, faced the high powered Globetrotters. Aamatex Powerwashing’s Alex Ostrin shot the lights out with a game high 25 points, but the Globetrotters pulled off the upset and advanced to play another day.
Chai Lifeline got off to strong start in the championship game, moving the ball with precision and executing a stifling 1-3-1 trap. Great ball movement led to many open looks that Pacey Jacoby took advantage of by hitting three 3-pointers which catapulted him to a game-leading 16 point first half and Chai Life Line to an 11 point halftime lead.
In the second half, the Globetrotters eliminated most of the 11 point deficit almost immediately with suffocating defense anchored by game co-MVP Nechemiah Gross. Gross also took over on offense with his team leading 11 second-half points, including two 3-pointers, finishing with 17 points for the game. In total, the team hit seven 3-pointers in the second half, one from game co-MVP Avi Proctor, one from Yis Kaminetzky and three from Ari Kaminetzky leading the Globetrotters to the 56-54 win.
Chai Lifeline battled all the way to the buzzer, and as tough as the Globetrotters defense was, Chai Lifeline managed to hit five second half clutch 3-pointers, including two from Yonah Tarzik and two from Yoni Rothberg.
The game displayed the tremendous sportsmanship that has become a trademark of the Mitch Gross Basketball League. After the game both Gross and Proctor were insisting that the other should be named game MVP.
