Championship Sunday: Bergen County Girls Flag Football League

(BGFF) Much like last fall, the Bergen County Girls Flag Football League had perfect weather for their championship Sunday on Father’s Day June 16. Three different division winners were decided at Johnson Park in Hackensack.

2/3 Division: #1 Colts vs #2 Broncos;
final score: Broncos 31-Colts 20

In a thrilling championship game, teamwork was the key ingredient in securing victory for the Broncos in the 2/3 division. Offensively, Libby Block, Liana Geliebter and Dayna Hercman all had their best receiving game of the season—and the timing couldn’t have been better. Zoe Lipsky Schainker dazzled everyone as she had some amazing runs, including a burst from the Broncos own five-yard line running the length of the field to score a touchdown. Hannah Hercman and Sari Gold had key defensive flag pulls late in the game, stopping the Colts to preserve the lead. The Broncos took over possession with just a couple of minutes left on the game clock, when they managed one more TD with Liana Geliebter throwing a perfect floater to Sari Gold who made a spectacular catch in the end zone. A great team effort all around led the Broncos to victory in this upset!

4/5 champs: Saints

4/5 Division: #1 Saints vs #3 Panthers; final score: Saints 28-Panthers 14

The 4/5 championship game saw the underdogs #3 Panthers looking to upset the #1 seeded Saints. These two teams tied in the regular season and Panthers Coach Aaron Glatt, who may deserve “coach of the year” award for his team’s upset of the Seahawks in the semifinals, had a great game plan working as he rode his team’s defensive performance to an 8-6 halftime lead. Emmy Glatt, who was unable to play most of the semifinal due to an injury, was back at full speed for the championship and she wooed the crowd with some superb runs. In the end however, the Saints were just too powerful a team to overcome and they managed to pull away with a 28-14 victory. Saints stars included Noa Bleier, Leila Pinewski and Maya Ratzersdorfer.

2/3 champs: Broncos

6/8 Division: #1 Falcons vs #2 Rams;
Final score: Rams 28-Falcons 20

The teamwork theme was evident in the Falcons vs. Rams game as well. These two teams had met twice during the regular season, with each of them snatching a win. Everyone knew the championship game was going to be a close battle— and the game didn’t disappoint. Both the Rams and Falcons gave it their all and the intensity of the game was evident throughout, as the lead changed hands several times. Stars of the game included Nicole Pruzansky with one receiving TD, 1 throwing TD and a key interception. Isabel Weiner was electric as the Rams QB with three throwing TDs and all around QB play. Rayna Hoenig as well as the Edell sisters—Kira and Nessy—all turned in outstanding defensive performances which helped keep the Rams in the game.
