Ben Porat Yosef students enjoyed many special activities during Chanukah. There was lots of latke, donut, and sfenj frying going on in the Early Childhood program. In the grades, the children enjoyed a school-wide Maccabiah in which they were divided into teams. Competitions included: constructing a chanukiah out of recycled materials, delivering a dvar Torah, composing an original Chanukah-themed rap song, performing a Hebrew song, decorating a mechitza, and other activities. In addition, the students had a Chanukah sing-a-long, and grades 1 through 4 participated in workshops about Chanukah, observed the impact of light and dark on the senses, and studied the properties and impact of oil in various mixtures with other liquids. The students were divided into teams and took turns spinning the big dreidel and answered questions about Chanukah in a contest. The children also enjoyed a fun performance of “Josh the Juggler” as a Chanukah treat. At the end of each busy day, Rav Tomer Ronen, Rosh HaYeshiva, lit the Chanukah candles for all students in a special school-wide candle lighting ceremony.
