You’ve probably noticed some huge talk about ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based chatbot system that uses natural language processing (NLP) to generate text. I had never heard about this chatbox or even heard of the product until I was asked about it.

A scientist friend I know saw me in shul. He asked, “What do you think of ChatGPT?”

My reply: “What’s ChatGPT?”

Thanks, David Fisher.

That was three weeks ago.

This is cutting-edge technology. I’m in no way going to pretend I’m an AI expert, though with ChatGPT, you can literally start using it the day you read this article (after Shabbat, of course). A lot of my readers will read my column over the weekend. I am making a super simple “Using ChatGPT Guide” with a number of easy YouTube videos. Email me if you can’t find it: [email protected].

ChatGPT allows people to ask questions or write a speech with help from the bot—a bot is an autonomous program on the internet or another network that can interact with systems or users. ChatGPT will respond with easy-to-read and Shneur Garb-type replies and subjects.

.

The ChatGPT “chat-looking app” is created to simulate a real conversation, with a super-easy way to reply, based on ChatGPT Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF). The replies are straightforward to read because the data is compiled from humans.

What do you need to know about ChatGPT?

The Basics

OpenAI, a San Francisco-based AI and research company, launched ChatGPT on November 30, 2022. OpenAI also created Whisper, an automatic speech recognition system, and DALL•E 2, a popular AI image and art generator.

Research labs with AI-generated text tools like ChatGPT have been training the bots on billions of written words, including everything from blogs and websites to books and the Bible.

The takeaway: With the release of ChatGPT, AI-based text generators are now available to real-world regular people.

The first version of ChatGPT has over a million users! ChatGPT can replicate real conversations, and the bot can explain, remembering what was said in the conversation, expand on your questions when asked, and even apologize when it gives the wrong answer.

How Can You Use ChatGPT?

ChatGPT can be used for various apps, customer service, online shopping, Human Resources, IT, making a rap battle, and even how-to guides on another level. ChatGPT can also make an interactive story, allowing people to explore and learn from it.

Use Cases for ChatGPT

1. Generating responses in a chatbot or virtual assistant to provide more natural and engaging interactions with users.

2. Content based on keywords.

3. Creating customized communication, such as email replies or what item you may want to purchase.

4. Translating the text from one language to another.

5. Let’s say you have a long document. You can ask ChatGPT to generate a shorter version.

6. Using chatbot-generated answers to create automated replies. It used to be called FAQs, but this is on a whole other level.

How to Get Started With ChatGPT

ChatGPT is in beta right now, and you can get started by going to chat.openai.com. “Sign Up” to create an account. That’s it. ChatGPT will provide examples of what you can do with the tool and help you through the process of running your first queries.

Right now, ChatGPT is free to use—but the company admits they may need to charge to accommodate the huge costs behind the scenes.

The Limitations of ChatGPT

AI-based chatbot systems do have some limitations. They can only provide answers based on the data they have been trained on. ChatGPT is not a search engine. It responds based on what it was trained on. The chatbot may not be able to provide in-depth information or understand context or jargon, i.e., I once told my colleague, “I’m on it!”—and she kept replying, “What are you standing on?”

As with all AI tools, users, educators and business owners should be aware of the dangers of potential bias. If the data that ChatGPT is trained on is biased, the answers the bot provides will be biased. Please, before rolling this out in any public capacity, be very careful about monitoring how ChatGPT replies to ensure the text is free of bias and inappropriate content.

There is no way to fully explore the value of this tech in just three weeks, but be in touch with me for additional examples. I am learning right along with you!
