Chaverim Expands Coverage to Springfield

Chaverim of Union County has expanded their coverage to Springfield, where they currently have seven volunteers, and they are actively recruiting more. Founded immediately after the tragedy of September 11, 2001, Chaverim was launched by a group of concerned individuals eager to provide non-emergency, volunteer aid that would be within the capacity of a grassroots organization.

Chaverim assists motorists stranded due to minor hurdles, such as car lockouts, flat tires or running out of gas, as well as helping the elderly and handicapped in the community with their daily needs. According to a representative from the organization, after being screened and background-checked, all recruits receive an initial in-depth training, which includes live presentations, with an emphasis on efficiency and professionalism, and convene every few weeks for continuing education.

Why Springfield? “Interestingly enough,” said a Chaverim representative, “probably there’s hundreds of hundreds of Jewish families in that area. We were surprised to learn how many families there actually are out there.”

Chaverim in Union County’s coverage already included Elizabeth, Hillside, Irvington, Linden, Newark, Roselle, The Oranges and Union. They receive up to a couple hundred calls a day and can be reached on their emergency hotline at 908-866-6166.
