On Chanukah we celebrate Jewish children learning Torah. In the days of Antiochus, children went to study Torah, hiding in hills and caves because it was strictly forbidden. Their parents were so proud of their sacrifice as a strong link in the chain of Torah observance, that they rewarded them with gelt. Nowadays CYM is very proud of its links in the chain, its students who learn Torah. Prominent supporter Richard Pomerantz personally distributed Chanukah gelt to every single Cheder Yaldei Menachem student, in appreciation of their valuable Torah study.

In connection with the Chanukah lights, CYM learned about fire safety from the fire fighters themselves in an entertaining lesson. When prepared in a safe manner, fire warms and lights up the surrounding area, yet fire can also be dangerous. The incredible Hillside fire fighters explained how to stay safe with fire, and what to do if there is an unsafe fire. They also showed the children the firefighter’s role in putting out a fire. The children got to explore the safety gear they wear and equipment they use, including the incredible fire truck. What a fascinating experience!
