I fully empathize with Michael Feigin (“My Kids Will Go to School” July 30, 2020), and all other parents who are advocating for schools to open. I also recognize that schools plan to take all necessary precautions to safeguard the health of the children. However, nowhere in my article did I state that “all schools must categorically remain closed.” I urged extreme caution since we are dealing with the lives not only of children, but of all the adults in schools as well. All medical experts are concerned about a second wave of COVID-19, and teachers with a variety of pre-existing conditions are at risk. Furthermore, contrary to Mr. Feigins’s assertion, children are at risk as well as adults. A study published in JAMA Pediatrics and backed up by leading virologists indicates that children may carry the virus at high levels. I also suggested that as in any case involving potential life threatening situations, halachic guidance be sought. Let us pray that we are making the right decisions.
