Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and Marc Goldfarb has taken advantage of this popularity to teach the sport to children. Now, he’s looking to expand.
Goldfarb, who started the Chevra Lacrosse Program in Passaic, is planning an open house in the very near future and is currently looking for a good location to play.
“We’re reaching out to the Teaneck-Englewood community to bring them the fastest-growing sport going on right now,’” he said. “Any kid that has basketball skills, soccer skills, hockey skills or flag football skills will love lacrosse.”
And he’s not alone in this endeavor. He recruited lacrosse player Kyle Bergman to help. Bergman was a 3-time CAA all-conference player at Drexel University, and finished his collegiate career with 100 points. He has also represented the Israeli national team in multiple competitions. He was the leading scorer amongst Israeli midfielders at the 2014 World Lacrosse Championships, helping them to a seventh place finish. He was also the leading scorer on the team at the 2015 World Indoor Lacrosse Championships, where the team finished in fourth place. Bergman is eager to coach, and will be a valuable asset to attracting kids to the sport.
“Coaching lacrosse gives me an opportunity to give back and teach the sport that has given me so much,” he said. “I’ve been playing lacrosse for 20 years now, and I’ve had some great coaches in my career, and I know that they have been a big part of my development. The opportunity to make an impact on kids is something that I love to do.”
Goldfarb and Bergman both pointed out that there are many things one can learn when they play lacrosse.
“A child can build his teamwork, confidence, self-esteem and sportsmanship,” said Goldfarb. “These are things that complement the education that they’re getting in their Yeshivas.”
“A lot of the things that kids can get out of lacrosse are characteristics that are consistent across all sports,” added Bergman. “Kids can learn how to work within a team, how to overcome hardships whether it be in a game or in practice, how to dedicate yourself to a common goal. Lacrosse is a tight-knit community, so kids can learn about the camaraderie aspect, too.”
And if this goes well, Goldfarb hopes to expand the program even further.
“We want to eventually build a youth league in Teaneck-Englewood,” he said. “The way we do that is by having players like Bergman get involved on the grassroots level where they can bring their love and passion for the sport back to the Jewish community.”
