Central Jersey foodies were thrilled to learn that Highland Park’s kosher Chinese restaurant would be reopening after suffering a devastating fire seven months ago; one that, unfortunately, also destroyed the adjacent Jerusalem Pizza. China Lee reopened on Thursday, September 12, with the same delicious menu items and friendly staff, at the same location (229 Raritan Avenue) with new décor.

“One ‘requirement’ of a Jewish community is a Chinese restaurant. We are lucky to have China Lee—a great restaurant with great food,” said Alan Borck of Edison, as he picked up some takeout items. Highland Park’s Korey Bronson was eagerly awaiting his order of steamed wontons with garlic sauce. “I’ve been so hungry waiting for them all this time. I had to come on their first day back to get them.” Albert Mitzner, also of Highland Park, added that the reopening was “an exciting moment for the community. Having more dining options benefits the entire Orthodox community.”

The announcement of the reopening created quite a buzz on social media and in WhatsApp groups. Comments on Facebook showed the support of the community for the eagerly awaited announcement.

Shalom Cohen, owner of China Lee and Jerusalem Pizza, was happy to greet the customers as they welcomed China Lee’s return. He noted that Jerusalem Pizza was more heavily damaged, but hopes to reopen in two or three more months if all goes according to schedule. Cashier David Blum noted that “it is exciting to be back and see the customers come back and order their favorites.”
